FAQs

Q-How do I upload my Logbook

The Logbook is not a requirement for our online event. However, during registration a wnyic.zfairs.com, the inventor will be asked if they want to submit their logbook for a Special Recognition Award.  If you answered YES then the You can submit your logbook or journal as a PDF  using either a scanner app on your phone (such as the free Adobe Scan app for iOS and Android)  and taking pictures of each page of your logbook, scanning your logbook into your computer and making it into a single PDF, or by using Google Classroom tools to create a link to your document. Once you create your PDF in one of these ways you can upload it to zFairs for judging purposes – use the “Paperwork” menu item in zFairs when you have completed your registration.

Q- My inventor’s school is closed and that’s where their prototype, display board, and logbook are. Can they still enter?

Yes. Because of the unusual circumstances, the display board and the logbook will not be part of the judging. If there are students that do have them, they will be eligible for Special Recognition and will NOT be considered as extra points in the Online Judging. The student will need to create a drawing(s) or re-create a prototype in the best and most clear way they can as the video is still a requirement for the event. The inventor’s presentation still needs to be clear, confident, and complete- indicating research as well as the other criteria. The presentation guidelines cover all that’s required in the presentation.

Q- Why is a video required this year?

Because our event is fully online this year, the video will be the only opportunity for the Inventors and their Inventions to be seen by the judges. To learn more about the presentation guidelines, which also include lots of helpful hints for the inventor when planning, filming, and uploading the video please click here.

Q- My school was unable to hold an Invention Event at their school. Can they still compete in Western New York Invention Convention?

Yes. Create an account at wnyic.zfairs.com and pick your child’s school from the drop-down school drop-down list. If your school is not listed, it can be filled in manually.

Q. My child’s school doesn’t participate in Invention Convention. Can I still register him/her for Western New York Invention Convention?

Yes. Create an account at wnyic.zfairs.com and pick your child’s school from the drop-down school drop-down list. If your school is not listed, it can be filled in manually.

Q: Why is the Invention Log required?

The Invention Log is a valuable piece of the Invention Process and it is TYPICALLY required in both the Original and the Re-Use categories. It’s a complete and accurate record of the ideas, plans, and processes by which the invention was created. Invention Logs can be used by students to prove they came up with the idea and invention. It is also a piece of the Judges scoring rubric. You can download the Invention Log here. It is not required to be in color and it also can have additional pages if necessary.
*The Logbook is NOT required in our 2020 online event but during registration, if the inventor self-nominates for a Special Recognition Award for their logbook, they will need to upload it to the “Paperwork” tab. It will need to be uploaded as one full pdf, not separate pages. There are free scan apps such as Adobe Scan that can be used, as can a scanner (usually part of a printer), if that is available.

Q: How many inventions can one student enter?

A student can enter up to (2) two inventions (one in Original and one in Goodwill). And, the student only has to pay the $20 fee once!*

*For 2020, there will be no fee.

If the parent/guardian is unable to assist the student in registering, the teacher or program leader needs to be the primary contact as an email will be sent to verify the email address. The email will come from ‘NoReply”.

Q: Can Inventors work in teams and how do they register?

Inventors can work alone or in teams of two. When the invention is registered, information for each student will be entered.  If the Inventors register as a team, they will present only one Invention Log with information for each student within.
*Our 2020 online event is free and only allows teams of 2 to be physically together in the video presentation if they live in the same house. All team members need to be registered, regardless of where they live. If only one team member presents, all team members must be acknowledged in the video presentation. All team members should be a part of the video presentation planning. The first team member that registers must make sure to check the box “this will be a team project”. When Registration is complete, that inventor will receive an email from ‘NoReply@zfairs.com’ with a KEY to send to the other inventors before they register. They will need this KEY to link to the project. This key is also part of the initial registration and can be retrieved by logging back in, clicking on profile, then clicking on ‘edit’.

Q: Can I pay WNY Invention Convention by mail?

Yes. However, WNY Invention Convention cannot accept any payments unless the students, their inventions, and their programs are first registered here by the deadline. Once that is completed, download and print the Pay By Mail form. Payment must be received before the day of the event.
*Our 2020 Online event is free to enter. All members of an inventor team must register.
