FAQs

Q- My inventor’s school is closed and that’s where their prototype, display board, and logbook are. Can they still enter?

Yes. Because of the unusual circumstances, the display board and the logbook will not be part of the judging. If there are students that do have them, they will be eligible for Special Recognition and will NOT be considered as extra points in the Online Judging. The student will need to create a drawing(s) or re-create a prototype in the best and most clear way they can as the video is still a requirement for the event. The inventor’s presentation still needs to be clear, confident, and complete- indicating research as well as the other criteria. The presentation guidelines cover all that’s required in the presentation.

Q- Why is a video required this year?

Because our event is fully online this year, the video will be the only opportunity for the Inventors and their Inventions to be seen by the judges. To learn more about the presentation guidelines, which also include lots of helpful hints for the inventor when planning, filming, and uploading the video please click here.

Q: Why is the Invention Log required?

The Invention Log is a valuable piece of the Invention Process and it is TYPICALLY required in both the Original and the Re-Use categories. It’s a complete and accurate record of the ideas, plans, and processes by which the invention was created. Invention Logs can be used by students to prove they came up with the idea and invention. It is also a piece of the Judges scoring rubric. You can download the Invention Log here. It is not required to be in color and it also can have additional pages if necessary.
*It is NOT required in our 2020 online event but may be considered for a Special Recognition Award if uploaded.

Q: How many inventions can one student enter?

A student can enter up to (2) two inventions (one in Original and one in Goodwill). And, the student only has to pay the $20 fee once!*

*For 2020, there will be no fee.

If the parent/guardian is unable to assist the student in registering, the teacher or program leader needs to be the primary contact as an email will be sent to verify the email address. The email will come from ‘NoReply”.

Q: Can Inventors work in teams?

Inventors can work alone or in teams of two. When the invention is registered, information for each student will be entered.  If the Inventors register as a team, they will present only one Invention Log with information for each student within. There is a $20 fee for each student.*
*Our 2020 online event is free and only allows teams of 2 to be physically together in the video presentation if they live in the same house. If only one team member presents, all team members must be acknowledged in the video presentation and all team members need to be registered. All team members should be a part of the video presentation planning.

Q: Can I pay WNY Invention Convention by mail?

Yes. However, WNY Invention Convention cannot accept any payments unless the students, their inventions, and their programs are first registered here by the deadline. Once that is completed, download and print the Pay By Mail form. Payment must be received before the day of the event.
