FAQs

Q-How do I upload my Logbook?

To complete registration, the inventor will be required to submit their logbook.  You can submit your logbook or journal as a PDF  using either a scanner app on your phone (such as the free Adobe Scan app for iOS and Android)  and taking pictures of each page of your logbook, scanning your logbook into your computer and making it into a single PDF, or by using Google Classroom tools to create a link to your document. Once you create your PDF in one of these ways you can upload it to your profile for judging – use the “Paperwork” menu item in zFairs.

Q- Why is a video required this year?

Because our event is fully online this year, the video will be the only opportunity for the Inventors and their Inventions to be seen by the judges. To learn more about the presentation guidelines, which also include lots of helpful hints for the inventor when planning, filming, and uploading the video please click here.

Q- My school was unable to hold an Invention Event at their school. Can they still compete in Western New York Invention Convention?

Yes. Create an account here and pick your child’s school from the drop-down school drop-down list. If your school is not listed, it can be filled in manually.

Q. My child’s school doesn’t participate in Invention Convention. Can I still register him/her for Western New York Invention Convention?

Yes. When Registration opens, create an account here and pick your child’s school from the drop-down school drop-down list. If your school is not listed, it can be filled in manually. If you are a Homeschool Family or a Troop, that will be the name of your “school”. Q: Why is the Invention Log required?

The Invention Log is a valuable piece of the Invention Process and it is required in both the Original and the Re-Use categories. It’s a complete and accurate record of the ideas, plans, and processes by which the invention was created. Invention Logs can be used by students to prove they came up with the idea and invention. It is also a piece of the Judges scoring rubric. You can download the Invention Log here. It is not required to be in color and it also can have additional pages if necessary. It can be filled in digitally before printing.

Q: How many inventions can one student enter?

A student can enter up to (2) two inventions (one in Original and one in Goodwill). And, the student only has to pay the $20 fee once!*

*For 2021, the fee is reduced to $10.

If the parent/guardian is unable to assist the student in registering, the teacher or program leader needs to be the primary contact as an email will be sent to verify the email address. The email will come from ‘NoReply”.

Q: Can Inventors work in teams and how do they register?

Inventors can work alone or in teams of two. When the invention is registered, information for each student will be entered.  If the Inventors register as a team, they will present only one Invention Log with information for each student within. Inventor teams of two can be in different grades. However, they will compete in the grade of whichever team member is in the higher grade.

Q: How much does it cost and can I pay WNY Invention Convention by mail?

For 2021, the cost per Inventor has been reduced to $10 (this includes either an individual inventor or an inventor as part of a team). Payment be mail is accepted but WNY Invention Convention cannot accept any payments unless the students, their inventions, and their programs are registered by the deadline. Once that is completed, download and print the Pay By Mail form. Payment must be received before the day of the event.
